Beer tasting event recap and another GIVEAWAY

25 Nov

On Friday, Alex and I were invited to a blind beer tasting event at our friend Ryan’s apartment. The rules were simple. Each person was to bring two 1 pint bottles of beer wrapped to conceal its identity. Additionally, the beers all had to be within the IPA, Stout or Christmas/Winter genres. The person who brings in the winning beer of each category gets a prize.

Our friend Ryan is no joke when it comes to beer so there was definitely a lot of pressure trying to select something the wouldn’t put us (and our somewhat lackluster knowledge of beer) to shame.

Let the games begin.

I went up to the Market District bottle shop to purchase our beer selections. The variety of different beers can definitely be overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for. There are so many different labels with graphics designed to appeal to your visual senses and lure you into buying a particular bottle just because “it’s pretty”. I didn’t want to fall for such trickery so I decided to go with some well-knowns: Stone IPA, Dogfish Head 75 Minute, West Coast IPA and Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout.

So how did I fare? Here is a recap of the evening:

Each beer bottle was carefully wrapped, labeled by its type (i.e. IPA, Stout, Christmas), and numbered.  Everybody in the group sampled each number and voted on which one they liked the best.

To vote for your favorite in each category, you simply put a check mark next to the number you most preferred.  If you guys are counting up the number of beers on our voting ballots, you will notice that we had a TON of beers.  Forty one beers to be exact.  Luckily for us, the IPAs (which are our favorite) were the first 11 rounds of tasting.  And it was the category that we had the most investment in since we brought 3 IPAs.  None of which won.   We were a little disappointed but not altogether surprised by the outcome.  The winner was Cigar City Brewing Jai Alai, a beer that is nearly impossible to find in our area.  Oh by the way, the person who brought this winning beer was Ryan.  Do I sense a conspiracy?

Ryan won a Fat Head’s Holiday beer glass.  Yay!

After the IPA round, we took a well needed break from beer. Sipped on some water.  Ate some chips with dip.  Brainstormed our next big invention that will make us millionaires.

It was about midnight when we moved on to the Christmas/Winter category.  I have to admit, Alex and I were tuckered out at this point in the evening.  We only tried about 8 beers in this round before we decided to head out so we, unfortunately, didn’t stay to witness who the winner was.

Ryan, thanks for having us over and exposing us to a variety of different beers that we may not have tried on our own! We had a blast and you were a wonderful host.

Even though we were not winners, Alex and I wanted to give our readers an opportunity to win some cool beer glasses.  As a tribute to our losing beer selection, we will be giving away a set of 8 oz. beer tasting glasses made from upcycled Stone IPA bottles. This giveaway item was given to us by pic76 on Etsy. I stumbled upon their store just the other day as I was looking for interesting holiday gifts and was so impressed with their selection of upcycled items.  Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials (like empty beer bottles) into something more practical.  At pic76, they offer a wide variety of handcrafted glassware including drinking glasses, vases, candles, earrings and lighting.  Super cool, right? We think so!  Check out pic76 on Etsy to see all they have to offer.  They can even accommodate custom requests and guarantee that all orders placed by December 16th will arrive in time for Christmas.

I’m not sure about “all time” favorite beer, but this time of year I really like Shiner Cheer. It has just a slight peppermint flavor. I really didn’t think I’d like it, but turns out I love it. Also, I’m a big fan of Sam Adams Winter. It’s the only Sam Adams flavor that I actually like. Now send me those beer glasses!

My favorite beer is anything brewed by Rogue, Left Hand, or New Belgium. But if I had to pick one I’d have to say New Belgium’s Fat Tire. (Of course when I’m in the UK its either Guinness cold flow, Strongbow, or local ales all the way.)
