Summer favorites

The best part about summer is being able to cook outside. Alex and I try to utilize the grill as much as possible because, simply put, it requires a lot less clean up on my part.  Well, that’s not the only reason why but it certainly is one of the most important ones! Now don’t get me wrong, I love to make a great braise or roast but nothing screams summer like a nice grilled piece of meat.

Our all-time favorite summer meal is the All-American hamburger and hot dog. It’s simple, delicious and it’s easy to customize.  We don’t doubt that everyone knows how to grill a “dog” but here are some ways we like to prepare the classic in our household.

1.  We generally try to use natural casing hot dogs because we love the extra crunch it gives.  But if natural casing isn’t available, we like to marinate our hot dogs overnight in beer.

2. My favorite way to top a hot dog is with sauerkraut, onion and mustard.  There is nothing better, in my opinion. Sometimes when I’m feeling a bit feisty I like to use fried red onions or french fried onions.

3. Split top hot dog buns are amazing.  We love to butter them up and toast them on the grill before putting on the dog. You will too!

4. Always dress the dog not the bun.  This is probably one of Alex’s biggest pet peeves, as he considers himself to be a bit of a hot dog connoisseur.  Although, personally, I like to spread my mustard right on the bun.  Marriage is all about accepting each other’s differences.

5. Think outside the box.  The best part about eating hot dogs is the toppings.  So why not get creative? Some of the non-traditional toppings we like are: pickled daikon and carrots, cilantro, Sriracha and mayo, Thai chili peppers and ramp mustard.  The possibilities are endless!
